For the first time, the youth worker met him about 4 years ago, when he was a volunteer organising a festival. He was modest, did not talk much, he was not seen around the village, and nobody really knew anything about him. At one point, the youth worker began seeing him more frequently around the village. He was interested in his activities. The youth worker decided to stop him on the street and remind him of their first meeting at the festival. The boy was very surprised that someone actually still remembered him. They had a nice conversation and soon, they met again. According to the young man, he was a happy-go-lucky young person up until he was 13 years old. He liked to communicate, to find new exciting adventures and experiences. After his parents’ divorce, they moved to a new place and he switched schools. In the new school, he was bullied until the end of school and terrorised by his stepfather. He had no friends in the new school, but he stayed in touch with a couple of old friends from his former school. The young man had basic education and he did not have the desire to continue his studies. He became withdrawn and afraid of people. For 9 years, he has been staying home and found solace from the computer, playing computer games and thus earning some money. He only communicates with people on the computer and there is a lot of communication with foreigners. According to him, he is afraid of society, of getting hurt again, and therefore, he does not trust anyone. He has developed an anxiety disorder and he gets panicky when he has to be in a room with strangers. The young man wants to change his situation…
His first step with a youth worker was to help with a preparation of an event in a library. He is still in good contact with the library employee. There were many meetings with the youth worker – they had conversations, set small goals. One day, the youth worker invited an Unemployment Insurance Fund employee to talk with him about the opportunities offered by the Unemployment Insurance Fund. He thought about it, went to see a career advisor of the Unemployment Insurance Fund, and decided to register himself. With the help of the Unemployment Insurance Fund, he managed to get an appointment with a psychologist. He began making progress – he is attending Youth Centre outings and is always helping with the preparation of events. He participated the small group activities organised by the Prop Up. There was a lot of talk about foreign countries. During these conversations, he realised that he could also go abroad and the youth worker began sending him information about the possibilities on volunteering abroad. He passed the youth worker’s letters on to his friend who complained he was bored and had nothing to do. The young man from the Prop Up encouraged his friend to go to Italy as a volunteer for a month. The friend took his advice and the emotions were very positive. In spring, the young man from the Prop Up decided to do some volunteer work as well – the emotions were great and one month was not enough, so he stayed there longer. He rented a flat, started going to the gym, eating healthy, and working out with a personal trainer. He is getting acquainted with the culture of the country, taking walks in the mountains and in nature.
